Mathematical Operations - Letter Substitution

Mathematical Operations:  This section of verbal reasoning deals with questions based on simple mathematical operations. The four fundamental mathematical operations that is addition, subtraction, multiplication and division and relational operators that is less that, more than etc are denoted with certain symbols or letters and the candidate is required to analyse the question and then perform the required operations.

Letter Substitution: In these type of questions you are provided with certain letters representing the symbols. A statement is given, the candidate is reqired to substitute the letters with the symbols and perform the calculations.

Illustration:  If L stands for +, M stands for -, N stands for X and P stands for div, then 14 N 10 L 42 P 2 M 8 equals

A. 153               B. 216                  C. 248               D. 251

Answer: A

Solution: Fisrt we will substitute the symbols in the place of letters. the expression becomes

large 14 times 10 + 42 div 2 - 8

Now we will solve it by using BODMAS

So, first solve for N (times ) and P (div )

large 140 + 21 - 8

THen we will solve for + and -

= 161 - 8 = 153

Hence, the corrrect option is A.
